Ocean City Radio was launched with humble beginnings in 2018 from a converted caravan in a residential setting. It was an internet only service, providing listeners with the option of tuning-in either via mobile phone, laptop/pc, tablet, smart tv or Alexa. On Friday 10th November we joined the brand-new PlymDAB network which increased our potential audience to around 320.000 listeners locally in addition to that established on the internet. People can now listen on their DAB+ equipped car radio and homebased radio.
We became incorporated as a ‘community interest company’ at the beginning of 2020 and operate as a not for profit organisation.
The whole team are volunteers who also make a small monthly contribution to the station overheads. Those costs are supported by small-scale advertising from local businesses.
In 2022 we received a very generous grant from The National Lottery Community Fund which financed a new purpose-built studio in the form of a log cabin. The caravan then became defunct.
Most recently, we have moved into a generously sized studio suite in the Estover area of Plymouth
This move is an incredible boost to our overall objective and provides a solid platform to build upon the awarding of Most Community Focused Radio Station for Plymouth in the Southern Enterprise Awards.
Ocean City Radio is going from strength to strength and is fast becoming the station of choice among people in Plymouth, South-East Cornwall, West Devon and the South Hams. Our listening figures have become well above those predicted as access to our service has become much easier thanks to DAB radio.
